Common, living amongst algae on rocky shores, in pools and under boulders and overhangs. Seen spawning on the shore in summer and early autumn. Also recorded from the shallow sublittoral. Feeds on anemones especially Actinia equina and Metridium senile. Old records from the Clyde. This species has now been split into two taxa - A. papillosa and A. filomenae (Kienberger et al., 2016). The records here therefore are an aggregate.
