Common, locally numerous, living from low water downwards, inshore and offshore, on sand and muddy gravel. The juveniles are abundant byssally attached to algae, the main spatfall is in August/September. Adults frequently have epifaunal growths of sponges (Suberites sp.) and barnacles. Some mariculture. Dead shells abundant. Many old records.
