Widespread, living on sand, mud and in maerl, low water to 10m. Locally abundant on Zostera marina and algae, especially Codium tomentosum, Laminaria spp. and Fucus serratus overlying sand and red algae on hard substrates. Sometimes under boulders. Feeds on a wide range of animal matter. Less common in the north, and apparently now absent from the Clyde although dead shells are found. Dead shells widespread. Many old records. |
