Heppell & Smith (1983, p 41) noted that Stephen kept three squid from a haul on the Sea of the Hebrides, 195m, 1935, of which two specimens of Todaropsis eblanae are extant. In the Explorer ship's notebook Stephen noted '1 Brachioteuthis bowmani ? kept'. As Stephen (1944) lists only one Brachioteuthis bowmani (from 61°27'N 03°42'W), he may have concluded that the relevant specimen was an atypical Todaropsis eblanae. Unfortunately it has been lost.
