Very common living at low water on stones and shells in pools in sand in Loch Ryan in 1991. Spawning in July. Recorded living in Loch Ryan with oysters imported from Brittany (Orr, 1944; Millar, 1961). Fresh dead shells also found in Linne Mhuirich, Loch Sween in 1985 (Smith, 1987c), possibly also introduced with oysters (Minchin et al., 1987). One live specimen found at low water on a pebble in Clachan Sound in 1998 (Smith, 1998), where there are no oyster farms. Also recorded from Loch Striven. Ciliary feeder. Could become more widespread due to the oyster industry, but may not breed successfully in many localities. |
