Adult specimens were found living at three localities in the Little Minch and Sound of Sleat in 1993, taken by scallop dredge, in muddy sand, 20-40m (McKay, 1995). Dead shells have been recorded from Lochmaddy (McIntosh, 1866) and from Lough Swilly (Hart, 1892c). The record from the Mull of Kintyre (as Calliostoma papillosum) noted in many works including Allen (1962) is in error. Thompson (1842) stated that it was not procured at Sana [Sanda] Island but in 50 fathoms 8 miles WSW of the Mull of Galloway in April 1841. This is normally regarded as a southern species, but it occurs as far north as Orkney (McKay, ibid.). Now known to occur around the north of Scotland into the north Sea. The specimen in the Natural History Museum, London, lacks precise data. |
