Sporadic but locally common, living on and in sand and muddy sandy in sheltered brackish lagoons and inlets in the Outer Hebrides, Islay, Loch Sween and Mulroy Bay. Tolerates more brackish and variable conditions than Cerastoderma edule, but also lives in mixed populations. The small isolated populations are prone to catastrophic destruction. The young live on algae, Ruppia spp. and Zostera marina.
