Fairly common and locally numerous, living in clean sand at low water and inshore. Some mixed populations with Ensis magnus, giving difficulties of identification. Less widespread than Ensis magnus. Divers' records have again been found unreliable. Dead shells widespread with large wrecks on exposed and moderately exposed sandy beaches. All records from the west coasts of the Outer Hebrides are now suspect and should be checked as they are likely to be Ensis minor. Many old records.
