Common and locally abundant, living at and just below the surface of firm brackish mud on the upper shore, sometimes on gravel at river mouths. Also on Zostera marina and on algae in more saline conditions and on open shores. General detritus feeder. Dead shells abundant in shell sand adjacent to large populations. Many old records, especially from the Clyde.
