Very common and widespread, probably ubiquitous in appropriate habitats. Living low on the shore, inshore and offshore to below 400m on bedrock, gravel and shell gravel. Requires clean water and tolerates current. Part of the diet is microscopic red algae (Farrow & Clokie, 1979). Presumably also eats bacteria and detritus as it is found below the reach of light. The plates and girdle are often coated with manganese. Many old records.
