Figured: S M Smith
Height: 20 mm

Sporadically very common, living on exposed rocky shores, generally in the zone of Pelvetia canaliculata and amongst Mytilus edulis where polymorphic striped forms are usual. Also common on more sheltered boulder shores, where it may almost totally replace Littorina littorea and Littorina saxatilis. The form in this habitat is larger and heavier-shelled than that of the exposed shores, sometimes nigrolineate but often plain pale yellow or buff with a greyish apex. Mixed diet of micro-organisms. Antrim records unconfirmed. Apparently absent from the north coast of Ireland and rare in the Clyde. Dead shells widespread but not common.
