Abundant, living on rocks and boulders in all exposures, but more common on sheltered shores. Also on saltmarshes. Mixed diet of micro-organisms. Dead shells abundant. Old records probably include other taxa in this group. No attempt has been made here to record the subspecies and varieties listed in the older literature because of the likelihood of errors.
