Living at low water under boulders and amongst the roots of small algae. Also taken alive on hard ground west of South Uist. Few records from Scotland, none north of Skye, but fairly common on the Donegal coast (Nunn & Smith, 1987). Food chiefly sponges such as Hymeniacidon perlevis. Dead shells widespread but sparse, long persisting as recognisable sinistral fragments in shell sand. Most old records from the Clyde.
