Figured: S M Smith
Length: 150 mm

Common, locally abundant, living in large beds at low water and below to over 100m out to the shelf edge, especially in areas of tidal current. Colonies are also found in rock pools in exposed to moderately exposed situations, on and around boulders, in crevices and under ledges. Isolated individuals and small clumps part buried in sand or gravel may provide anchorage for Laminaria spp. The rock pool specimens in particular keep their juvenile heavy shaggy periostraca to full size, whereas those in beds become smoother with age. Buried specimens are seldom bearded. Dead shells common. Many old records.
