Common, living in ascidian tests from low water to moderate depths. Completely enfolds itself in the test by pulling the skin around itself by its byssus threads. Juveniles very common free-living amongst small algae and the roots of Corallina officinalis, both on the shore and inshore, and amongst shell gravel. Dead shells common. Many old records.
