Common/abundant, living on most rocky shores. Small specimens are on exposed bedrock, large ones are particularly common on boulders covered by Ascophyllum nodosum in sheltered areas and also where there is fresh water run-off. Banks or beds common on gravel at mouths of streams and rivers and in the shallow sublittoral. Extends further into brackish lagoons than most species, living at about the level of the halocline. Many farms. Dead shells abundant. Many old records. Mytilus edulis var. galloprovincialis Lamarck, 1819 may also occur in the area as escapes from farm stock.
