Common, living on muddy or mixed bottoms inshore and offshore from low water to about 1000m. While the chestnut-coloured form has been found in the Clyde and Loch Etive, elsewhere the white form predominates. General carnivore and carrion feeder. Although the egg capsules may be attached to various hard substrates, the female also attaches them to her own shell. Occasionally survives in tidal harbours having been cast overboard from fishing boats. Dead shells widespread. Many old records. |
