Very common living on many species of algae from mid-tide downwards. Smaller juveniles usually present on crustose corallines, larger juveniles on various small algae such as Mastocarpus stellatus and Laminaria spp., adults in the cores of holdfasts, especially those of Laminaria hyperborea. Occurs in situations exposed to wave or current action and in areas of moderate exposure, less often in sheltered sites. Feeds on algae. Dead shells common in shell sand. Many old records. |
