Very common, living in sand and gravel and amongst pebbles, in the byssus of Modiolus modiolus, in Laminaria holdfasts, in crevices and around boulders set in gravel and in old piddock holes. Mid shore to 30m. In confined situations the shells are distorted and have been called Venerupis saxatilis (Fleuriau de Bellevue, 1802). Dead shells very common. Many old records.
